Machine vision detectability and maintenance standards

TMMA’s Traffic Safety Research Institute will host a March 6 session to provide potential insights for AV system developers who seek to refine operational design domains beyond the category of road network type, including highways and urban settings. This 45-minute session features three industry experts who will discuss proposed metrics road agencies may use in evaluating lane markings to support machine vision systems; correlations between traditional methods used for evaluating lane markings to support human drivers; the roles of contrast, gradient, edge detectability and commonly understood photometric properties like retroreflectivity and how contrast markings ensuring lane detectability. Roadways 4.0 – Lane Marking Standards and Machine Vision Technologies

Andrew Whydell, vice president of global product planning for vehicle systems at ZF Group, will address this topic from the standpoint of machine vision technologies. Issues covered will include: Adoption rates for machine vision systems within the U.S. automotive market; How machine vision systems interpret lane markings and traffic control devices; How these factors influence highly variable situations, such as roadway work zones; How and where standardizing six-inch wide longitudinal lane markings should be prioritized; Why lag pattern contrast markings are preferable for machine vision; What agencies should consider when developing traffic control device standards for machine vision systems.
