Key Focus Areas

pavement markers for vulnerable road usersDriving innovation in pavement markings

TMMA members are the global leaders in pavement marking innovation, safety solutions, services and products.

Through collaboration, research and innovation, TMMA’s focus on the transportation industry is keeping vehicles in their dedicated travel lanes safely separated from each other, pedestrians, cyclists and other vulnerable road users.

TMMA members are committed to working towards achieving zero deaths on U.S. and European roadways by embracing advanced automotive safety systems that work seamlessly with roadway lane lines, symbols and colored travel lanes. Bright, clear pavement markings are already a part of daily life in Europe, where all new cars must offer lane support computer vision vehicle technology that interacts with pavement markings.

TMMA is working towards a world in which data from millions of vehicles equipped with sophisticated sensors identify potential risks for traffic engineers before serious or deadly crashes occur. TMMA is evaluating technology that will allow members to precisely pinpoint hot spots across the globe where deficient or worn VRU infrastructure increases pedestrian and cyclist risk, especially in urban areas. This information will be beneficial to local transportation planners, elected officials and the general public seeking low-cost solutions to significantly improve roadway safety for pedestrians in those at-risk locations.

Currently, no national minimum maintenance standards exist for vulnerable road user pavement markings, symbols or colored lanes. TMMA members are committed to ensuring those roadway features are installed and maintained to standards that achieve the maximum safety benefit offered by each unique roadway safety product they offer.

TMMA seeks to support the road marking industry and those who serve it, including local traffic engineers who struggle every day searching for the right solutions to solve local road marking issues with simple and often low-cost common sense roadway safety solutions.

TMMA’s four key focus areas include:

TMMA seeks to catalyze the benefits of connected camera vehicle safety technologies to improve road marking performance, condition monitoring and maintenance cycles to improve safety for all road users.

Catalyzing the benefits of machine vision technologies.

TMMA seeks a safer more sustainable industry. As marking material and equipment manufacturers, TMMA is uniquely positioned to prioritize the development of innovative eco-friendly materials and practices.

Driving the conversation on pavement marking material sustainability issues.

Vulnerable Road User (VRU) safety includes utilizing the latest technologies to improve the installation, monitoring, and maintenance of VRU safety systems like high-visibility crosswalks and colored lane and marking systems.

Supporting efforts to enhance road marking industry safety benefits for vulnerable road users in work zones and urban areas.

Effectively and reliably recognizing and interpreting road markings across different locations and jurisdictions begins with system uniformity. TMMA considers uniform road marking systems and standards essential for both human and computer vision systems. Developing enforceable materials installation standards and specifications ensure industry integrity and a competitive marketplace.

Partnering with agencies and equipment suppliers to ensure compliance with road marking standards and specifications.

TMMA also focuses on creating sustainable safety materials and processes that support and accelerate new automotive safety technologies including the safe deployment of automated vehicles which rely heavily on pavement markings for safe, efficient guidance and mobility.

TMMA welcomes companies who manufacture roadway marking materials or components, the equipment used to install, remove, or monitor those markings, or the epoxies and aggregates used to make roadways safer in high-risk or urban locations.
